Be the First to Forgive
Living a life of unforgiveness is like driving your car with your parking brake on. It causes you to slow down and lose your momentum. And you end up being worn-out!
One of the most expensive luxuries you can possess is to be unforgiving toward someone. A deep-seated grudge in your life eats away at your peace of mind like a deadly cancer, destroying a vital organ of life. In fact, there are few things as pathetic and terrible to behold as a person who has harbored a grudge for many years.
The heaviest load you can possibly carry is a pack of grudges. So if you want to travel far and fast, then travel light. Unpack all of your envy, jealousy, unforgiveness, revenge, and fear.
Never reject forgiveness or the opportunity to forgive. The weak can never forgive because forgiveness is a characteristic of the strong. When you live a life of unforgiveness, revenge naturally follows. But revenge is the deceiver. It looks sweet, but it’s most often bitter. It always costs more to revenge a wrong than to bear it. You can’t win by trying to even the score.
Be the first to forgive. Forgiveness can be your deepest need and highest achievement. Many times it’s the first step of an answer to prayer or release of a miracle. Without forgiveness, life is governed by an endless cycle of resentment and retaliation. What a dreadful waste of effort. “He who has not forgiven an enemy has never yet tasted one of the most sublime enjoyments of life,” declares Johann Lavater.
Forgiving those who have wronged you is a key to your personal peace. What the world needs is peace that passes all misunderstanding. Forgiveness also releases you for action and freedom.
“Never cut what can be untied” (Joseph Jobert). Don’t burn bridges. You’ll be surprised how many times you have to cross over that same river. Unforgiveness is empty, but forgiveness makes a future possible. You’ll “get out of the right side of the bed” and “start your day on the right foot” if you ask yourself every day, “Whom do I need to forgive?”
